Blair Carruth’s Story:
When my wife and I were married my wedding gift to her was a poem I wrote that described our coming together as a couple. While we had known each other for many years, and our life activities brought us together from time to time, it took us a while to figure out we were meant to be a couple. The poem describes the intersections of our lives and the simple and beautiful love that eventually grew:
We were together.
Unknowingly, the future lay in the present.
A seed is planted, firm but unnurtured.
Years unfold.
The seed lies dormant.
Quietly, our lives cross again.
The seed nurtures.

Many years after our wedding I decided I wanted to create a song around the poem so I wrote a simple melody that corresponded to its words. I also wanted to support the melody with a nice accompaniment, but I did not possess the compositional skills for such a project. As a result, the melody’s score sat in a folder in my piano bench for 12 years.
With our 40th wedding anniversary approaching, I was contemplating what gift I might give my wife. I remembered the melody to the poem I had previously written and wondered if there might be a way to develop it further into a nice piece of music. Again, my compositional skills were no match for the project, but by a streak of luck I learned of Lindy Kerby who, as part of her musical practice, writes custom songs. I contacted Lindy, and she agreed to take on the project. The result is a beautiful modification of my original melody with piano and flute accompaniment. This song is dedicated to my wonderful, loving, and beautiful wife on our 40th wedding anniversary.
